hey. hey. you should read my fan fiction.
here's the link
and the first chapter is under the cut
You've always loved working with costumes and props. You were fascinated to no end by how movies could turn lifeless sculptures and empty costumes into living, breathing characters.
It's no wonder that you ended up working as a preservation artist for the special effect exhibits featured in the local pop culture museum. You really do love your work, but sometimes you question your career choice when you're up before sunrise, (not that impressive, given the short winter days) waiting at a bus stop under the misting clouds.
Now what you might find yourself asking is: why you, a perfectly sane and reasonable night owl would be up at this hour? The answer is clear. All the blame falls on the movie industry. This might seem strange, or perhaps even illogical. "Surely movie producers don't expect anyone to need their costumes after filming," and "Nobody in the film industry actively antagonizes art preservationists, least of all one lowly museum worker," but that would simply be wrong.
For you see, anyone that refuses to make props and costumes even remotely capable of holding up against the inexorable march of time is automatically an inconvenience and mortal enemy to you in particular.
One of the older, more fragile and decaying costumes had a piece broken off of it after closing. Nobody actually touched it as all the pieces are either trapped inside glass display boxes, or hiding several feet behind a crowd-control rope.
It just happens that whatever artists decided to make that particular suit chose a type of foam that starts disintegrating after 15 or so years of soft, indirect light and low-to-moderate humidity like some sort of rich lady’s over-pampered, over-engineered purse dog with 17 different diseases. And so, you've been called over at too-fucking-early o'clock to deal with it before opening.
As you vacantly stare into the distance, something strange catches your eye. Across the street, a row of stores sit. They're the same ones you see every day you take this route, but at this time of day the windows are dark, still not opening time.
Your eyes settle on a dingy, narrow alleyway, concrete ground muddied from rain. It's nestled between an unlabeled building with only a sliding garage door on its front, and a small dance school with unlit dance floors and mirrors visible through the darkened second floor window.
In the alleyway there are two oval shapes, glistening with a distinctive glassy glint. They're shifting slightly, with a sparkly graininess that you're not sure is actually there, or is just due to the faint lighting creating static. They look like they’re part of a larger silhouette behind them, enshrouded in shadows that the weak light that creeps out from the street just can’t seem to kill.
You wouldn't really know how to describe it. Under the dim halos of yellow street lamps, you want to say it's a figure, but that might just be the sleepiness talking, because the proportions are way off to be human.
You check the time and see that your bus won't be here for another 15 or so minutes, so you decide to investigate. Crossing the street, you can make out a little bit more detail.
It does appear to be some sort of figure, slumped over and propped up against a stack of discarded wooden pallets that had been left leaning against the wall.
You walk up to the entrance of the alleyway and stare at the figure some more while you stand under the dance studio's little overhang to avoid the slight drizzle. The first detail that sticks out to you is its absurdly long nose and plasticky white skin.
Correct in your assumptions that it wasn't human, you relax a little bit. You're glad that you aren't being nosy about some poor person just sleeping in an alleyway. Instead, you're being nosy about some strange abandoned doll, which is much more within your scope.
You realize that the strange, staticky shapes you first noticed are glasses. You assume that there's some sort of color-shifting material glued behind the glasses to create that static effect, you wonder where you could buy some for your own projects.
Weighing your curiosity against the risks, you step over to crouch down in front of the doll to examine it more closely. You work with a fair amount of dummies, mannequins, dolls and puppets, so you're decently familiar with common practices in the crafts. You often need to be able to look at a project and know from a glance what steps need to be taken to preserve it. In spite of this, you're having a hard time figuring out the make of this specific doll.
It looks fancy enough to be custom-made, based on the unique face and considerable size. Standing up, it would probably land just around your mid-chest, in comparison. Then again, somebody clearly left it just sitting out like trash out here, not even properly sheltered from rain under the awning. You decide to test the articulation in the arms.
To your delight, you find ball joints that roll smoothly when you move them. Gently setting back down the arms, you grab its head with both your hands and lift it up for a better look. It has little red dots on its exaggerated cheeks and greasy black hair swept up in a mullet.
To your trepidation, the strange doll has a ventriloquist dummy's jaw as well. You've always been freaked out by their weird, detached jaws. It's ironic considering that working with puppets and strange costumes is your literal job .
Now, that isn't to say you're afraid of puppets in general! You're quite fond of marionettes and stop-motion figurines, but ventriloquist dummies in particular have always spooked you way worse than any of the horror movie props you work on. Something about those jaws with their unmoving lips and jerky way they moved always set you on edge. The image of fake teeth biting down and crunching through skin and flesh unwillingly flashes through your mind.
Nevertheless, you'll be as thorough as possible. You pick the puppet up and feel around the back for the jaw's control mechanism, but you don't find anything. Maybe it's just for aesthetics?
The hands of the puppet are the most intricate, all ivory-white hinges and telescoping, layered articulation that can fold over itself and move with the same fluidity as human hands. It's beautiful craftsmanship. Part of you wants to figure out how to take them apart so you can study the mechanisms and improve your own technique, but the preservation worker in you screams about fragile parts and lack of replacement pieces.
In any manner, this puppet seems to be abandoned and unwanted… and it is your job to preserve and repair things like this. Your workplace doesn't mind if you use their space for your own projects so long as it doesn't get in the way of actual work and you're in between personal projects right now, so you think you'll just take this thing with you to your job. Then once you're done with work, you can start on fixing up and modifying this new plaything of yours.
Looking at the time again, you hastily sling the puppet over your shoulder, its limp head rolling as you manhandle it. You rush to get back to the bus stop. It's only a few minutes until it's meant to arrive.
Nobody on the bus minds your extra passenger. It isn't the first time you've proudly dragged some unwieldy contraption or elaborate costume onto public transport, nor will it be the last. The middle-aged bus driver with big, colorful earrings just gives you a tired look of recognition: she's used to your antics by now.
The trip goes by quickly, with you entertaining yourself on the last stretch of walking from the bus stop to your museum with the stares and weird looks you receive from the handful of people up and moving this early.
Now you've made it through the building and into your little backstage workshop, complete with bins of craft supplies and jerry-rigged tools.
You clear off a space on your personal workbench affectionately named 'the operation table,' for being made of dull stainless steel and having remarkably similar proportions to a twin-size bed, or per the namesake: operating table. Not that you've ever seen one in person. A surgical table, that is.

SPOILERS AHEAD!
As Stiles lowered himself into the tub, freezing cold water engulfed his body, turning his blood into liquid frost. His only comfort was the feeling of Zaida’s warm hands through his shirt, clutching onto his shoulders as he trembled. As her grip became firmer, he began to panic, his breathing shallowing and chest heaving with anxiety. He was about to die. Most people had their whole lives to spend, growing old and experiencing the world, before they had to ponder such a thing. Yet here he was at seventeen, minutes away from the end. What would it be like? Would it be cold and dark? Would it be warm and bright, like the promised land? Or would it be nothing - just an empty void? Would he see anybody? Would he see his mother?
Then he stopped thinking about his death, and started worrying about his return. Would it even work? Would he be able to find the information he needed to save his father? Would he make it back? Would he see his dad again? His friends? Would he see Zaida? Would she be able to pull him back?
Of all the questions in his mind, he could identify which were his own, and which were shared. He couldn’t explain how, but he knew Zaida was concerned. “It’ll work,” Stiles whispered, assuring the girl - and admittedly himself. His nerves jumbled together into a tangled bunch, leaving him jittery.
“On the count of three,” Deaton spoke serenely, and a shudder of apprehension ran through his body. “One, two…three.”
On the doctor’s final word Stiles held his breath, squeezing his eyes shut as he slid beneath the icy surface willingly. If he had been cold before, it was nothing compared to the numbing pain now beneath his skin and the feeling of hundreds of thousands of pins and needles jabbing at his flesh. He waited for something to happen - for the light to stop shining through his shut eyelids, or for the world to fall away. Instead, as more and more air escaped his lips, his lungs started to burn. It was only a slight sting at first, but the more and more he fought against every bone in his body telling him to rise to the surface, the worse the pain in his chest blazed. He tried to withstand it, he really did, but after minutes he couldn’t help it. The instinct to surface and gulp down precious air was too strong. He didn’t realise how hard he was fighting against the girl holding him down until Zaida’s hands slipped and he used that to his advantage, bursting out of the water with raspy breaths as he sucked down air greedily to soothe the fire in his lungs.
Only, the room he emerged into was not in Deaton’s clinic. In fact, it wasn’t really a room at all. It was like an empty car garage, painted sterile white with blinding lights overhead and bare tiles below. The only contents were their three metal tubs, but as Stiles, Allison and Scott all climbed out they noticed that wasn’t entirely true. In the centre of the room just behind them was a giant stump - the widest any of them had ever seen. Slight bunches of bright green moss clung to parts of it as small plants sprouted from the cracks in the wood, disclosing that somehow, the tree was still alive - despite having been decapitated long ago. Scott was the first to venture forward wordlessly, water dripping off his soaking wet form as he reached out to lay his palm flat against the top of the stump. His body immediately stiffened and Stiles didn’t know how he knew, but he could feel that Scott was no longer present. Following his best friend’s example, Stiles too extended his hand towards what was undoubtedly the Nemeton, pressing his skin against the rough wooden texture.
As soon as he came in contact with the stump, a wave of energy surged through his arm and his eyes seemed to shut automatically. This time, there was no blinding light to greet him on the other side, but rather the darkness of night. It took him a moment to adjust to the shift, but once he could register forms of mass around him he recognised where he was. Looming trees around him, the canopy above and soil beneath his feet - the Beacon Hills Preserve. The sound of young voices echoing through the cold night’s air sent him scurrying behind a thick trunk, hiding to wait as two figures passed. Only…those two figures seemed instantly familiar.
“Are we seriously doing this?” The voice of his best friend greeted his ears - only it wasn’t the Scott McCall that he had left in that strange sterile white dreamscape. It was the Scott McCall of the end of winter break, about three quarters of a year ago.
“You're the one always bitching that nothing ever happens in this town!” Stiles knew it was his own voice that he was listening to now and he watched as a smaller version of himself with a much shorter haircut stumbled over branches and through shrubbery, leading the way to where he knew a jogger had reported finding half of a dead body. It was the night he had dragged Scott out into the woods, not knowing they were searching for Laura Hale’s separated form. The night Scott had been bitten by Peter, and they had both been propelled into the realm of the supernatural. The night that had changed it all.
“I just- I keep replaying it over and over in my head and none of it is possible. It can’t be a human and it can’t be a wolf, and the only solution that could possibly explain it all…is something entirely insane…It’s both.” A smooth and rich voice he knew all too well invaded his head. He could tell it wasn’t coming from anywhere else because it wasn’t really a sound that his ears could pick up on. It was more like an echo of thought. A memory, he realised.
“I was trying to get a good night's sleep before practice tomorrow.” Scott whined, but in his clumsiness he fell behind. "Stiles! Wait up! Stiles!”
But Stiles didn’t wait - not his younger self, nor his current one. He found that watching himself move through the thick woods was a strange sensation to say the least, and it was only then that he finally understood what people meant by having an 'out of body experience'. Hurrying over the same path, they moved onward to where Stiles still remembered he’d gotten caught. Surely enough, his father emerged from the shadows, flashing a bright torch-light right in buzzcut Stiles’ face.
“Hang on, hang on. This little delinquent belongs to me.” He grumbled, calling off the officers with him that reached for their firearms, thinking him to be a threat. The sight of his father hit him like a sledgehammer to the chest. Back in his reality, Stiles had no idea where his father was, or even if he was still alive. But here…? Here he was standing right before his eyes without so much as a scratch. He hadn’t thought it possible to miss the sight of someone so much, though he supposed that came with not knowing if you were ever going to see someone again.
“We’re not going to find his body, because we’re going to find him - alive and well….” There came her voice again, lingering in his mind and reminding him of what he was there for and providing him with the encouragement he needed. If he could do this - if he could focus - he could save his dad. “You’ll be able to do it, Stiles…You can do this.”
“Dad, how are you doing?” His younger self tried to act casual despite the fact that he knew he would be grounded for at least a week. A grounding that he did not adhere to in the slightest. He didn’t understand - how was this supposed to help him find the Nemeton?
“Hey, we’re going to figure it out.” Zaida reassured him, as she always did, restoring his faith in his own abilities. “You can do things that the rest of us can’t...we couldn’t do any of it without you.”
“Well, young man, I'm going to walk you back to your car…” His father grabbed him by the jacket, dragging him away from the search party as he began a long-winded conversation about boundaries and not listening into police radio frequencies.
Stiles stepped back to allow his past self to walk by, but his heels caught on something solid, almost sending him tumbling to the ground. He managed to find his balance, twisting around to find that same wide stump emerging from the earth. The Nemeton. It had been right there that night, and none of them had ever noticed it before.
“I knew you could do it!” Zaida's excited tone in his head spurred him onwards.
Leaning forward, he reached out towards the stump. As soon as his fingertips grazed the wooden surface, a bout of dizziness sent his head spinning, his vision blurring and eyes squeezing closed to shut out the distorted image of trees whirling around and around. Losing his balance, he found himself falling forward, the ground rushing to meet him - only it never did. Instead he broke through a glassy surface, spluttering and sucking air into his lungs in a loud gasp. When his vision stopped churning, he was face to face with a familiar pair of hazel eyes and he knew he was back home.
“Zaida!” Isaac rushed into the back room where Zaida was sitting on the floor, propped up against the wall and half-dozing off as she waited. Her buttocks felt numb from bearing the pressure of her weight for so many hours, but she couldn’t bring herself to leave, wanting to be there when the others woke - or when it became clear they wouldn’t. The only time Zaida had left that day was to get a spare change of clothes, and simply because Lydia had forced her to do so just to distract her from her worries. “I can hear their heartbeats - they’re waking up.”
At the werewolf’s words she sprung into action, climbing up from the floor and rushing back into the main surgery room where Lydia and Deaton were standing, eyes fixed on the three metal tubs full of melting ice. They had needed Zaida to re-freeze the water every so often, and every time she had done so, her dread had multiplied in the pit of her stomach at seeing the lifeless corpses of her friends below the surface. She stood and watched impatiently, waiting for any sign of movement, but there was not so much as a ripple.
“I thought you said-” As soon as she began speaking the surfaces of all three tubs sloshed about suddenly, the water being splashed onto the floor as Stiles, Scott and Allison broke out of the baths. Loud gasps and heavy breathing filled the air as all of them felt relief easing the tension from their bodies. Finally.
“The towels,” Zaida called out to Isaac, instructing him to fetch the items as she rushed forward, offering a helping hand to Allison while the girl climbed out of the basin. It took all of her strength and willpower not to tackle Stiles into a hug.
Allison's alabaster skin was icy to the touch and upon Isaac’s return he offered the huntress a towel first, handing the two others to Zaida. She tossed one to Scott, who caught it mid-air, and held the last out for Stiles to take, half-avoiding meeting the boy’s eyes. Guilt rose within her as she recalled the way he had fought against her, his strength failing him as she had held him down, drowning him. Killing him. She knew it was stupid, but after having done that to someone - and not just anyone, Stiles - she felt different. Darker, almost. If she could do that to him, then what else was she capable of?
“I saw it. I know where it is.” Scott unfolded the towel hurriedly, pulling it around his shoulders as he stood, still submerged in the tub.
“We passed it. There's-there's a stump... this huge tree - well, it's not huge anymore, it was cut down - but it's still big, though! Very big!” Stiles stuttered, his voice still shaking as his body trembled from the cold, drying his body off.
“It was the night we were looking for the body-” Scott explained and Stiles cut him off excitedly.
“Yeah, the same night you were bitten by Peter.” He interjected.
“I was there, too, in the car with my mother. We almost hit someone.” Allison nodded in agreement, her upper body almost buried within the towel as she soaked up the warmth of it.
“It was me - you almost hit me.” Scott turned to the girl with shock behind his dark eyes at that new piece of information. It was all connected. “We can find it.”
The three finally registered the morose expressions of the people in front of them as they stared wordlessly. “...What?” Allison asked, eyes darting between them all.
“You guys were out a long time…” Isaac answered hesitantly, no doubt anticipating how they were going to react.
“How long is a long time?” Stiles questioned, silent alarm in the way his body stiffened.
“...Sixteen hours.” Deaton revealed and Zaida pursed her lips, knowing this wouldn't be received well.
“We've been in the water for sixteen hours???” Scott repeated incredulously, his jaw falling slack.
“And the full moon rises in less than four.” Deaton nodded grimly.
“Shit,” Stiles hissed, scrambling out of the metal bath and dripping a mess all over the floor.
“I’ve gotta get back to the alphas.” Scott was spurred on by the new information as well, knowing that the deadline was almost upon them.
“No, dude - you are not going back with them.” Stiles shook his head indignantly.
“I made a deal with Deucalion-” The werewolf defended his choice, but his best friend was having none of it.
“Does anyone else think that sounds a lot like a deal with the devil?” Stiles interrupted before he could finish.
“It sounds like Scott has a plan - which is more than any of the rest of us can say.” Zaida defended the wolf, a hard edge to her tone. She was willing to put her personal grievances aside for the time being, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t still hurt.
“Why does it matter, anyway?” Isaac drawled, leaning against the back wall, not understanding why a promise was so important to uphold given the circumstances.
“Because I still don't think that we can beat Jennifer without their help.” Scott admitted. He had felt Jennifer’s power. With one shove to the chest he had felt his sternum fracture and his ribs take the brunt of the impact. Simply breathing had been difficult while he healed.
“He trusts you more than anyone - tell him he's wrong.” Allison begged the veterinarian, taking Stiles’ side on this one.
“I'm not so sure he is…” Deaton answered hesitantly. “Circumstances like this sometimes require that you align with people you'd normally consider enemies.”
“So, we're gonna trust him - the guy that calls himself ‘Death, Destroyer of Worlds’ - we're gonna trust that guy?” Isaac gaped, appalled at the suggestion.
“That’s not what he’s saying,” Zaida sighed tiredly.
“I wouldn't trust him, no.” Deaton corrected the misassumption. “But, you could use him to your advantage. Deucalion may be the enemy, but he could also be the bait.”
“Did you hear that?” Scott tilted his head, ears perking up as he picked up on a sound the rest of them didn’t hear.
“I did,” Isaac nodded, being the only other person with advanced hearing. “Someone’s here.”
Deaton was closest to the doorway that led out into the lobby, and he walked through, stopping to stare at someone who had just entered as the bell above the door tinkled to alert them of a presence.
“I'm looking for Lydia.” A familiar voice carried through to the back room, and the redhead immediately followed after the doctor, emerging into the area behind the reception desk where she was still safe behind the Mountain Ash barrier. Hearing the twin, Scott and Zaida both gathered behind the girl for support.
“What do you want?” Lydia questioned, The last time she had spoken to the boy was when she had tried to stop the alphas from killing Boyd.
“I need your help.” Ethan answered shortly as he stood before them.
“With what?” Stiles approached, leaning against the door frame with a threatening glare upon his face.
“Stopping my brother and Kali…” The alpha admitted. “From killing Derek.”
“You’re not actually considering going with him, right?” Zaida gawked at her best friend, who hadn’t immediately flipped Ethan off and told him where to shove it - which was the way she would have handled it.
“Derek gave up his alpha status to heal Cora - he’s weak. There’s no way he would survive facing off against one of the alphas, let alone both Aiden and Kali.” Lydia reasoned, justifying her willingness to help.
“The lunar eclipse is in four hours - all of the werewolves will be weak.” Deaton added.
“That only means that Kali and Aiden will be more desperate to finish things off before that happens.” Zaida pointed out with a frustrated sigh. “You tried to talk to Aiden before and it didn’t work in the slightest. Why do you think it’ll work this time?”
“Because things have changed - we don’t want to be like this anymore.” Ethan cut in, providing his own reason for coming to Lydia for help.
“You might feel that way, but does Aiden?” Zaida questioned him, and he fell silent, clearly unsure. “That’s what I thought.”
“Zay, I have to try.” Lydia pleaded with the brunette with wide green eyes.
“You can’t fix him, Lyds,” Zaida whispered under her breath, her gaze softening.
“It’s not for Aiden. It’s for Derek.” The redhead vowed, and Zaida knew from the determination setting her features, she would not be changing her mind.
“I’ll come with you,” She offered, but Deaton pursed his lips, clearly disagreeing with that decision.
“Zaida, we’re going to need your help finding our parents.” Scott shook his head slightly. “We know the general area, but to pinpoint it…”
With a sigh of defeat, Zaida turned to face Ethan with a stern glower. “You better look after her, or I’m going to kick your ass myself.” She promised.
“Aiden won’t let anything happen to her, and neither will I.” Ethan swore with a dip of his chin, and that was all Lydia needed before she crossed the Mountain Ash barrier, going with the alpha twin and disappearing out the front door.
“So, what's the plan?” The brunette turned to the others, her hands planted firmly on her hips as she scanned their serious expressions.
“We’re going need a way to track them. Zay can sense their emotions if she’s close enough, but that depends on her bond with people.” Stiles explained, shifting into detective mode as he pondered a way forward.
“It’s safe to say I’m not all that close with your parents,” She drawled, leaning back against a metal bench. So far, the only people she'd ever been able to successfully track had been Lydia, Scott, and of course, Stiles.
“So we’re going to need a double assurance,” Stiles added. “Scott and Isaac can track them by scent, we’ll just need an item of clothing - something potent.”
“Okay, once we’ve got that we’ll meet at the Preserve and start looking.” Scott nodded in agreement.
Once again, Zaida had been saddled into teaming up with Stiles. Not wanting to make a scene, she’d gone along with it but now, as they sat in tense silence within the Jeep, she regretted that choice. Staring firmly out of the passenger side window, the hum of the engine was the only sound keeping them from complete and utter silence.
“Zaida, I wanted to talk to you,” Stiles cleared his throat awkwardly. “About what happened at the school. I just wanted you to know that-”
“I already know,” Zaida blurted quickly, not wanting to have this conversation in the slightest. Her stomach churned uncomfortably at the notion. “Lydia told me what happened.”
“Oh, she- she did?” He shuttered, eyes widening slightly as they flickered from the road to her and back again. “So then…”
“So we don’t have to talk about it.” She nodded fervently, swallowing thickly as she plastered a fake smile onto her lips in the hopes that her act of nonchalance was convincing. The last thing she wanted to hear was him ranting about Lydia again - she’d sat by idly and listened to that more than enough times before. “It’s alright.”
“Oh…” His demeanour suddenly brightened as he straightened up in his seat, not noticing anything askew. He was simply relieved that the air had been cleared. “Well, that’s great then - that you know, I mean.”
“Yup, super great,” She popped her ‘p’s, refraining from rolling her eyes bitterly as the Jeep pulled into the driveway of the Stilinski house. She was the first to unlatch her seatbelt, throwing open the car door and slipping out into wild winds. The gusts tossed her hair about her face, obscuring her vision and causing her to grip her skirt around herself tightly, not wanting to flash the whole street.
Zaida followed Stiles inside the house and then up the stairs, headed straight towards his father's bedroom. She had never been in there before now, so her eyes drank in her surroundings. It was a large room, with a queen sized bed in the centre and plain white furniture. To Zaida's surprise, the entire place had been cleared of any sign of Noah's late wife, Claudia. Though Stiles had told her his father never liked to talk about her, she would have assumed he at least kept some memories of her alive in the sanctity of the room they had once shared together. Perhaps it was too painful for the man.
Stiles riffled through his father's bedside table drawers before changing tactics, disappearing into the ensuite bathroom. A few moments later, she heard him on the phone with someone. "I don't know what to bring! Wait, I've got his underwear." The boy spoke and Zaida immediately slapped her hand over her face. Seriously? The person on the other end of the line must have had the same reaction, because then Stiles said, "Okay, what about his socks?"
"Was that Scott?" She questioned as he emerged from the bathroom, dirty pair of socks in hand, likely retrieved from the laundry hamper.
"Yeah," He nodded, walking quickly. They were in a rush, after all. "He didn't want to smell my dad's boxers, so I went with the socks instead."
"Scott didn't want to smell your dad's dirty underpants? Wow, I wonder why?" She drawled sarcastically, unable to keep a faint smile from tugging at the corners of her mouth. They hurried down the stairs two at a time, and then locked the front door behind them, emerging into a growing thunder storm. Standing still as she waited for the boy to finish and unlock the Jeep, she stared up at the rolling clouds of black and grey above as lightning flashed through the sky. "Jennifer must be getting ready..."
Another heavy gust of howling wind shook the cabin of the Jeep as they flew down the flooded highway, causing the metalwork to shudder around them. The rain was so heavy that despite the streetlights, they could barely see through the windshield, save for when lightning crackled through the thick and dark cloud canopy above. Truth be told, Zaida didn’t know how they were still on the road and not swept into the tree line already with how Stiles was driving. The boy swerved out of the way of falling and collapsed branches, taking tight turns at neck-breaking speeds when the road curved.
“Stiles,” Zaida called out over the sound of the engine struggling to keep up with how hard Stiles was pushing against the pedals. She had tried to bite her tongue, knowing what was at stake. However as she felt the wheel beneath her seat lift into the air as the car tilted after a particularly dangerous turn, she couldn’t handle it anymore. “Stiles, you’re going to kill us!
“I’m not gonna kill us!” He shook his head, jerking the steering wheel to the right sharply and the car skidded, veering into the opposite lane. Thankfully no one else was stupid enough to be on the roads right now, otherwise that particular move might have resulted in a head on collision.
“You’re going to go sliding off the road, and crash into a tree, and kill us!” Zaida insisted, her pitch rising with her panic as she gripped onto her seat with one hand, the other clutching the overhead handle.
“Yeah, right. If we crash I’ll buy you an exotic bird.” He snorted sarcastically, confident in his abilities. A little too overly confident, in Zaida’s opinion.
“I get that you need to find your dad - I really do - but we’re not going to be finding anyone if we are mangled corpses on the asphalt.” She pointed out, yelping as they took another sharp twist. “With the way this rain is pelting down, they might not even be able to identify our bodies - it’d power wash the flesh right off our bones.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you should be a writer? You’ve got a dramatic flare for detailed descriptions.” Stiles mused, brushing off her warning once again. Meanwhile the time between strikes of light and rumbles of thunder became shorter.
“I swear the lightning is getting closer…” Her breathing began to grow shallow and her stomach lurched into her throat at another swerve.
“Hey, Zay,” Stiles cooed at the realisation that she was genuinely scared, turning his head to look at her terrified face illuminated by flashes of light crackling in the sky. “It’s okay, we’re gonna be fine.”
“We’re not gonna be fine!” She exclaimed loudly, eyes widening as they fixed on the road ahead.
“We are-“ He began but she shook her head frantically, letting go of the overhanging handle to point at the road.
“Stiles! We’re not gonna be fine!” She screeched and he shifted his gaze to see a tree had collapsed in the middle of the road.
“Oh shit,” He swore and slammed on the brakes, desperately hoping that Roscoe would stop in time.
Instead, the rear wheels locked up in the water, sending them skidding across the road. He had no other choice but to yank the steering wheel as the car was sent spinning in a last-ditch effort to regain control. When it didn’t work, Stiles knew there was no recovering from the wheel-lock and made the split second decision to thrust his arm out in front of Zaida, barring across her chest and holding her back as the Jeep hurtled off the side of the road.
Zaida was thrust forward from her seat with a force that was both fast and strong, sending her straight into Stiles’ arm. The boy was the only thing holding her back from going straight into the dashboard - or through the windshield. It all happened so quickly that by the time she ricocheted off Stiles’ arm - her back and skull hitting the chair behind her painfully - his hand was lying limp in her lap.
“...Stiles?” She groaned through the pain, the muscles in her neck sore from the sudden jolt. When he didn’t answer, panic started to set in once more. Twisting to face the driver’s side despite the pain in her neck, she saw the boy’s figure collapsed over the steering wheel, his cheek pressed against leather as blood dripped from his pulverised temple.
“Stiles?!” There was far more urgency to her tone this time as she tugged her faulty seatbelt from where it was locked up, finally pulling it loose so she could lean over towards him. He’s dead. He’s dead. He’s dead. She had watched him die twice in one night, only this time he wouldn’t be coming back.
As her thoughts ran rampant she pressed her shaking fingers against his neck, feeling for his carotid artery - searching desperately for a pulse. He’d known the accident was coming - if he had just braced himself he would still be awake and alive and well, but instead he had chosen to save her, knowing that she would heal anyway. Damn it! Why did he always have to make it so freaking hard to be mad at him?
“Come on, Stiles! Stiles, please, come on!” She begged him, shifting her fingers until she felt the slow and faint beat, beat, beating beneath his skin. A pulse. He was alive. A sigh of relief tore from her body. “Oh, thank God! Why did you have to do that for? Huh? I would have healed! You stupid, reckless, amazing human being!”
Tossing her head back against the seat and taking in deep breaths as adrenaline coursed through her veins, she realised there would be no making it in time to their rendezvous if she didn’t leave now. Even then, going on foot, she would be cutting it close. Scott, Isaac and Allison would have to go on without them. Well, Isaac and Allison would, because Zaida knew the minute that the opportunity presented itself, Scott would be going after Jennifer and Deucalion. She had been planning to go with him, and Stiles had offered to help her enact her own plan behind Scott’s back. But now…
Well, now she had two roads ahead of her. She could leave - abandon Stiles and make a beeline for the Preserve. She might not make it in time to save her friends’ parents, but she might make it in time for the eclipse - in time to end Deucalion once and for all when he would be powerless and she would be unaffected by the moon’s weakness. She could finally kill the man who had murdered her parents, hunted her brother, and would be after her next. The man who would destroy anything in his path to get what he wanted, even the people she cared about. But looking at the boy beside her - the boy who had put his life at risk to protect her when her chances of survival were astronomically higher than his own - she knew she couldn’t go down that path. She couldn’t leave him here unconscious on the side of the road.
“Fuck,” She hissed and slammed her hands down on the dashboard loudly as her frustrations rose. Why did her damned heart have to be so soft?

WIP Wednesday: Evil Jack: Till Death Do We Part

So the real surprises of picking up long-lingering projects (*waves slightly* it's been fourteen years BMFM fandom and I never got a chance to watch the 2006 revival so I will ignore it) was
transporting my notes and outlines into Scrivener that I use now
it has been a hot minute rewatching any episodes but between this writing and Trigun: Three of a Kind, I have found many details lodged into my long-term memory that I totally didn't expect
picking up the narrative, if only ALL my writing projects could flow like that
Moving things has been complicated because the desktop tower computer a lot of stuff was saved on died and I need to buy a new hard drive for it. The files are fine because of backups. Automatic backups are the best octane; set them up. But there are extra steps to me getting what I'm looking for which is annoying. Me putting details into the stories that I double check and find canon evidence has just been fun. And wow, I've been able to write longhand rough draft on paper, which I have been blocked in other projects to need to have my fingers on the laptop keyboard.
So for everyone who's been introduced to Hannah Davidson in Trigun: Three of a Kind, this is a story from when she was five-years-old, the fourth one in the Evil Jack series.
Three figures get out of the ship and walk to the back door of the garage that led into the downstairs kitchen. They all had big ears and tails and one was a lady. Hannah pushed the window. It slid up easily, letting in all the cold air of December. At least it had stopped raining tonight because these new mice hadn’t brought umbrellas. Dad said there was time for the rain to become snow before Christmas.
They stopped half in the circle from the light over the back door but she could see they all had the same kind of olive green pants. “We definitely miscalculated local time,” the tallest said in a low voice, a man mouse for sure. “Just how late is it?”
“I have only been here once,” the lady mouse answered, equally quietly, “and you expect me to have the local time calculations in my head?”
“I expected to call for a welcoming committee once we got past the Plutarkian patrols,” he said back with a sigh.
“And I want to actually succeed at this mission and not get apprehended,” she snapped back without making her voice louder.
The shortest one heaved out a sigh. “I’d feel bad about waking Charley-ma’am up. She works. Uncle Modo won’t be as asleep at the scoreboard.”
Hannah leaned out of the window. “He’s your Uncle Modo too?”
All three of them looked up at the window and the shortest one moved more into the light. He had pale tan fur, lighter than Dad’s but darker than Uncle Vinnie’s white, and his hair was a dark brown except for a streak of orange between his antennae. “You must be Hannah.” He smiled. “I’m Rimfire, and Modo is my uncle. Is your Mom awake?”
“You live on Mars.” Hannah looked over at the spaceship hidden in the shadows since they turned off the lights. “Nobody said you had a spaceship. Is it broken?”
“No, because I actually know how to fly them,” the lady said. “Can you get your mother? It is important.”
“Okay.” She hopped back from the window and ran around the couch to open Mom and Dad’s bedroom. “Hey! We got company from Mars! Though he wants to go see Uncle Modo and I think he got told no.”

Rating: M
Pairing: Captain Rex x OC General Lara Lin
Wordcount: 4K
Warnings: clone SMUT - UNDER 18 DNI
Excerpt Summary: Lara takes Rex to Earth, and their relationship finally solidifies into something concrete.
Author’s Note: Granted I know some people don’t like mixing Earth with Star Wars, but it is somewhat canon, since evidently Han Solo himself mentioned it. That being said, a portal jumping mostly all powerful goddess can do what she wants, much like we all wish we could. And since we all know Rex usually has no time for anything outside of being a Captain, I preferred to make him a newbie to the bedroom scene.
AO3
Excerpt:
Laughing, Lara led him forward to the back door of the home. She punched in a code on a keypad and he heard the sound of the lock slide back. The door didn’t open automatically though, as it would have in Rex’s galaxy. You had to actually turn a lever and push it open. “Yes well, Separatists aside, the only sentient beings that rule this planet are humans. Though sometimes, that’s debatable. And this galaxy is on the far side of universe from yours - the Separatists wouldn’t arrive here in time to make any difference to themselves.” She stepped into the dim darkness of the house, where cool, dry air greeted them.
Really the wonders would not stop coming. The inside of the home was carefully crafted for comfort. There were couches with deep cushions, chairs, a graceful long table with heavy wooden chairs in the kitchen, and equipment in the kitchen he assumed was for preparing food. In front of the couches he saw types of electronics he couldn’t identify, but that he assumed projected something, perhaps like their holonet. She led him through the house, showing him the different rooms and the views from their windows, the theater room, the garage, and lastly, her bedroom.
“This is the master bedroom, my room. It has the balcony out the back, with a good view of the land, over the pool.”
Rex walked into a room bright with light, colored in a light gray with a lot of white accents. There were six large windows shaped in something of an outward bow, the shades up allowing the sunlight in. A set of French doors were in the center of the windows, giving access to the balcony. A massive, dark wooden bed with an intricately carved headboard and footboard commanded the center of the room, with matching dresser and night stands. The bedding was a combination of a grey-blue, with white accents and brown stitching in a little complicated design. Just beyond he could see another room attached to this massive chamber, and he dropped her hand to see what was past these doors. It was a bathroom, about the same size as any of the other rooms in the house, with a tub the size of a small pool and a walk-in shower that could fit 10 people inside. The closet was half again the size of the bathroom, a walk in area only partially filled with clothes. Everything about Lara’s property was on a scale he had only associated with royalty, or maybe an ambassadorial palace. He was overwhelmed, really by everything. By the beauty, the home, the barn, being on a planet he never knew existed, in a galaxy he’d never heard of until three months ago. With a woman he’d never expected to fall in love with. He found himself standing in front of the French doors leading to the balcony, staring out like a man who’d been given sight for the first time. Lara stepped up beside him without a word.
“I… thought I’d seen just about everything, traveling the galaxy for war. This…” He gestured with his hand at his surroundings, “I could never have dreamed this up in a million years.” He continued watching out the window, as a breeze rippled the tree branches. Suddenly he yelped when something brushed against his lower leg, hard enough to shift him. Looking down he saw a furry creature with pointed ears, golden eyes attached to a body with four legs and a long tail. It reminded him of a Loth cat, but smaller, more delicate with tiny little paws. He saw that the animal was returning his gaze, as it sat on its butt and stared up at him with intelligent, watchful eyes.
Lara reached down and picked up the animal and snuggled it to her body, rubbing her face against the fur. “This is Artemis. She’s one of the two house cats. There are four, give or take any day, that live in the barn to keep the rodent population down. Her sister’s name is Hera. Arty is more friendly than Hera, but if she’s already introducing herself like that, it’s a good sign she likes you.”
Rex returned look for look with the small creature, then reached out a tentative finger to touch it. She put her head forward, stretching toward his fingers - she wanted him to pet her. He touched the top of her head lightly, surprised at the silky soft fur. He scratched behind the little soft, triangle shaped ears and heard her purr in response, her eyes closed to slits that showed a tiny sliver of gold. He pet her head a few more times, and then the cat indicated she wanted down. Evidently human friendly time was over.
“Everything about you is magical to straight up unbelievable, Lara.” Rex said quietly.
“Honestly Rex, this is a big house. But there are far larger ones on Earth. The super rich, the royalty of this world, have houses with 30, sometimes 100 rooms. They’re living in palaces as a family. Someday, this house will fulfill its purpose, and there will be laughter, and feasting, there will be children playing games in the yard. I’ll have someone to teach how to ride. I’ll find the ones meant to share this wonderful place. Someday.”
“Well, today you have me.” Rex put a hand out to her arm, pushing her lightly to turn towards him. He looked into her eyes for a moment, studying the colors of the grays and blues with the light of Earthen sun shining in them. His right hand reached up to touch her cheek, then again traced the edges of her ear. He wanted to sink his hands in the cool depths of her curly hair and he reached for the end of the braid she so often wore, pulling the band off that held the hair in the braid. He worked the braid out, letting her hair loose, and his eyes widened hungrily when she suddenly shook her mane out, the curls bouncing freely over her face and shoulders. That was really all it took. He suddenly looked into her eyes and felt a raging need to kiss her, and the next thing he knew, he had her face in his hands, one hand buried in her curly mop and the other caressing her finely crafted cheek.
Lara kissed him back, feeling fire rising up within, needing to consume him, consume them both. She wasn’t entirely sure how, but they ended up on the bed, holding each other fiercely and kissing like one or the other was going to be dragged to their execution momentarily. At one point Rex tried to roll on top of her, not remembering he was still wearing the lower half of his armor. She stopped him, all the hard edges deeply uncomfortable.
“Yeah the armor has to come off. That is *completely* non conducive to this process.” Lara had said it with amusement, while Rex suddenly raised himself up on hands and knees and looked down at himself.
“I’m sorry. My armor is so second nature to me. I forgot it was there.” He stood and started removing the thigh plates, knee guards and boots. He removed the butt guard and codpiece with a rather self conscious look, then unclipped his utility belt last, letting it drop to the floor carefully with the Kama and blaster holsters still attached. He was now just standing in his blacks, and looked thoroughly embarrassed at how naked he felt, especially with the rather painful erection he was sporting. He was fiddling with his hands, more or less trying to do the work of the codpiece on the floor, a deep blush creeping up his neck to his face.
Lara found his embarrassment endearingly cute, and understood his self conscious feelings. He had yet to explore her body; she wondered if he would find all her scars distasteful. Her body wasn’t as pure and smooth as it looked covered with clothes. She sat up quickly and reached for his hands, offering hers. She wasn’t going to grab his hands away and destroy his dignity. He would have to choose to reach for her. He could see the olive branch in her eyes, and finally he reached one hand forward to hers, taking it like a man finding a lifeline. She pulled him back onto the bed with her, entwining her fingers with his for a moment, before clearly placing it on her breast. She looked him straight in the eyes as she did this. This is your permission. Touch me, her eyes said.
Rex sighed, the yielding feel of her breast beneath his hand. He left the one hand there, while he brought the other up behind her back, pulling her to him more closely. He could feel the length of her body touching his, with the armor gone. He reached over and took her hand, placing it on his hip. He looked into her eyes and nodded; he wanted her to touch him in return. Rex wasn’t sure he could cope with the surging excitement he felt, and he pulled her to him like a drowning man. He felt her hand glide over his buttocks, down his strongly muscled thigh, then back up, lightly, tentatively exploring his inner thigh. As he felt her reach get higher he suddenly reached down to stop her, then sighed, placing his forehead against her chest for a moment. He closed his eyes, inhaling her scent, feeling the pulse of her heartbeat against his brow. Finally he took a breath and placed her hand over his hardened cock, her fingertips brushing his testicles lightly. The feel of her hand over him about drove him past what he could take, and he left her hand there, suddenly running his own hand up the back of her shirt, feeling the muscles of her back with naked fingertips. He pressed himself against her hand, wanting more.
Rex suddenly rolled onto his back, taking her with him, she sitting on top of his thighs. She automatically sat clear of him, not wanting to go further than he was ready for. He held her there, sitting on his lap, and worked both hands under her shirt. She made a little impatient noise and suddenly grabbed the lower hem of the garment and pulled it off over her head, tossing it clear of the bed. She was still covered by the sports bra he had felt beneath the top, and remained in her breeches and boots. Rex took a moment to admire the landscape of her abdomen, her muscles visible now. And the little silvery scars. She saw him see the scars, then do a double take, and when he truly realized what he was seeing, he rolled her off of him so he could look closer.
“Lara. What? How? How have you survived all these wounds?” Rex felt somewhat horrified and yet intrigued at her collection; they looked like a road map leading to hidden destinations on her body, reaching beneath the clothes she still wore. He traced some with his fingers - they were smooth for the most part, though a few had ragged borders and were larger, more like old holes than cuts or scratches.
“Well, for starters, immortality does help…” She said it a little offhandedly, but realized her scars had brought it home for him. His brown eyes met her blue eyes with awe. “They still hurt, they still bleed. I don’t usually have a problem with infection, and the wounds tend to heal fairly quickly. It would take a lot of continued fire, or a bomb really, to slow me down. But even then, I’d heal quite a bit more miraculously than most. It won’t stop until my job in the universe is complete.”
Rex was still staring at the lines, tracing them lightly with his finger. Suddenly he leaned down and touched them with his lips, kissing the skin of her belly softly. She gasped a little in surprise - very welcome surprise. She felt the tip of his tongue lightly follow the lines as well and reached down to hold his head in both her hands. He got his thumbs under the band of the bra and started trying to get it off of her, to see what lay beneath. Faster than he could fumble with it, Lara snatched it off herself, revealing her breasts to him. Rex stared like a man seeing a holy revelation, long enough that Lara felt slightly self conscious. But before she could cover herself up, he grabbed her hands, looked her in the eyes and bent to suckle her. He let out the smallest grunt of surprise and pleasure, pulling a little harder as he sucked at her nipples. He could tell it felt good to her by her body language and increase in breathing, almost panting. Her felt her hands reach for the borders of his body glove shirt, and he helped her ruck it up, pull it over his head and toss it to the floor.
Now it was her turn to marvel over his defined chest and abs, to kiss his naked, sensitive skin. He moaned, unable to stop the sound from escaping as she bit his nipple slightly, raking her teeth over the edges and pulling at it lightly. He felt her hand return to his erection, and he reached down, thumbing the pants down, and off. Then, before she could really respond, he moved to take off her riding boots.
And realized quickly that removing fitted high boots was not as easy as it seemed, like a record scratching to a halt. He gave them a tug from the heel, expecting them to come off as easily as the rest of her clothes, and his eyes widened from the area around her feet in surprise. Lara laughed at his expression and sat up, explaining “Fitted English riding boots are not for the faint of heart. They frequently require boot jacks to get on and off.” She worked her thumbs into the top of her right boot and then looked at Rex with a nod and said “Pull.” He tugged at the heels again while she pushed from the top, and then felt them shift, sliding over her calf and off. They repeated the process to get the other off, and then he hurriedly grabbed the waistband of her pants, working them down over her hips.
Lara grinned at him after lifting her butt up to let the pants slide off. “In a hurry now, are we?”
“I’m not sure what the hell I’m doing, but I want to get to it,” he growled in her ear.
“Oh. Well in that case, slow down a bit. You’ll never get this first time back. We have time.” She reached behind her and grabbed the covers, pulling them down towards them. She took his hand and pulled him up the bed and under the covers with her. “You can take the time to explore, as can I.” She said this while running her hands along his back, down over both buttocks and then forward, one hand grasping his cock and the other cupping his balls lightly. There was no sound but for the rushing of blood in their ears. Rex could smell the floral, spicy scent she wore all around him, and it set him on fire, drowning in the sensation of the smell and the warmth of her body. Outside he heard the calls of some creature - they were all unfamiliar to him. She didn’t seem distracted or worried by their presence, so he ignored them to focus on discovering new territories.
“Lara, I need you. I’m not even sure how but… I need you now, soon. Please. Show me what to do.” He looked into her eyes, in a hurry now because his body was telling him he needed get a move on.
She returned his gaze, pulling him on top of her. He felt her spread her legs, so that he lay between them. She took his hand and guided him to her entrance, letting him feel the slick warmth, ready for him. “You put it in there.” He shot her a disturbed, worried glance. “It won’t hurt, Rex. Trust me.” She returned his gaze, but tried to convey encouragement. He sat up a bit, looking down to convince himself this was really what he was supposed to do. He reached back, grasped himself, touching the tip to her entrance. She could see his body tense, trying to respond to feedback he was already getting from barely a centimeter of skin. He took a deep breath, seemed to pray to the Force, and entered her. His eyes shot up to hers in a wordless response, the pupils widening to the point that the edges of his vision went blurry. Rex held himself stock still, afraid of the surge he felt rushing through his body. He felt Lara’s hands hold his hips lightly as feathers.
“Rex, look at me.”
He brought his eyes up to hers, panic on his features as he did his best to hold still. If he moved he was going to explode. His breath came in a pant, and he felt like her voice was strangely muffled, as if from far away. She reached up and pulled his face down to hers, pressing her lips against his. If this was meant to distract him, it wasn’t working that well.
“Look at me. Focus on my eyes. Rex, my love, listen.” He was struggling. “You can move. It’s okay. This isn’t an endurance race, it’s your first time. This is a wave that we can’t top. You’re going to have to let it wash over you.” She said it while carefully putting her hands on his hips again, and he felt her tug lightly, asking him to move his hips to her. “Let’s go, Rex. Ride it with me.”
She pressed her hips against him, forcing him deeper within her and he felt like she’d dropped him off the dragon in flight. There was a brief terror, then he was swamped by the most explosive, delicious feeling he’d ever experienced. He started to move his own hips, pushing himself deeper within her, faster, harder, losing himself in the action. He was surrounded by a new sensation shortly, as Lara came to her own climax. He felt her walls grip him rhythmically, pulsing and squeezing around him within her, and he held her close, wanting to be one with her. It was like watching an eclipse happen, feeling the light join with the other, no longer two separate entities, but one whole being for a moment in time.

Essential Things to Know About Installing a Backup Generator
In today's world, having a reliable source of power is not just a convenience—it’s a necessity. From unexpected storms to grid failures, power outages can happen at any time and bring your home or business operations to a halt. This is where a backup generator becomes a crucial investment. Whether you're living in an area prone to weather disruptions or simply want peace of mind, installing a backup generator is a smart and proactive step toward energy security.
If you’re considering installing a generator, it’s important to understand the installation process, safety considerations, and long-term maintenance involved. A well-installed backup generator can offer years of dependable service, but mistakes during installation or lack of proper planning can lead to costly repairs or even hazards. In this article, we’ll walk you through the essential things to know before and during the installation of a backup generator.
1. Understanding the Role of a Backup Generator
A backup generator serves as a secondary power source that automatically (or manually) kicks in when the main power supply fails. It ensures that critical systems—like lighting, refrigerators, heating/cooling systems, and medical devices—continue functioning without interruption. These generators can run on various fuel sources such as diesel, natural gas, propane, or even solar, depending on your setup.
They come in different types:
Portable Generators: Useful for small homes or emergency use.
Standby Generators: Permanently installed systems that start automatically during a blackout.
For complete home or business protection, a standby generator is generally the better option.
2. Choosing the Right Size Generator
One of the most crucial steps in the process is selecting a generator that meets your power needs. If you choose a unit that's too small, it won’t support all your essential appliances. If it's too large, you may end up overspending on fuel and equipment costs.
To determine the correct size:
List critical appliances: HVAC, refrigerator, water heater, etc.
Calculate wattage needs: Check appliance manuals or labels for energy usage.
Consult a professional electrician: They can do a load calculation to match the right generator.
3. Fuel Options and Storage
Generators can run on:
Diesel: Reliable and powerful, but can be noisy and requires safe storage.
Natural Gas: Clean and convenient, often connected to the utility supply.
Propane: Easy to store, long shelf life. Solar-Battery Hybrid: Great for eco-conscious homes, but depends on sunlight and may not offer high capacity for larger homes.
Your fuel choice should be based on availability in your area, your power needs, and your willingness to maintain fuel storage.
4. Site Selection and Ventilation
Where you install your generator matters for both safety and performance. Standby generators must be placed:
Outdoors, never indoors or in a garage.
On a flat surface (preferably a concrete pad).
At least 1.5 to 2 metres away from doors and windows.
In a well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide build-up.
In Brisbane and surrounding areas, local regulations may dictate specific installation zones, especially in residential neighborhoods.
5. Wiring and Transfer Switches
A transfer switch is essential for connecting your generator to your home’s electrical system. It safely transfers the power source from the utility grid to your generator and prevents backfeeding, which can damage your electrical system and pose a danger to utility workers.
There are two types:
Manual Transfer Switch: Requires someone to physically switch over the power.
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS): Automatically activates when a power outage is detected.
An ATS is recommended for standby systems, as it ensures seamless transition without any action on your part.
6. Permits and Regulations
Backup generator installation isn’t a DIY weekend project. In Australia, you are required to obtain:
Electrical permits.
Compliance with building codes and safety standards.
Inspections after installation.
In Brisbane, electricians must be licensed, and installation must adhere to AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules) and local council regulations. A certified electrician will handle all permit-related processes to ensure everything is legally compliant.
7. Hiring a Professional Installer
While you may be tempted to save costs with a DIY approach, backup generator installation brisbane is a task best left to professionals. A licensed technician or electrical contractor will:
Help you choose the right generator.
Handle the electrical wiring and transfer switch installation.
Ensure proper fuel line connections.
Test the system for performance and safety.
Guide you on ongoing maintenance.
In Brisbane, hiring local experts ensures you comply with Queensland’s strict electrical safety laws.
8. Routine Maintenance is a Must
Once installed, your generator will require regular maintenance for optimal performance. Here’s a simple checklist:
Run the generator monthly: Let it run for 10–15 minutes.
Check oil levels: Top up or change after every 100–200 hours of use.
Clean air filters: Prevent blockages and overheating.
Inspect battery and wiring: Look for corrosion or wear.
Schedule annual servicing: A licensed technician should inspect the full system.
Having a generator maintenance plan can extend the life of your system and prevent issues during emergencies.
9. Noise Levels and Aesthetic Considerations
Modern generators are quieter than ever, but they still produce some noise. Depending on where you live in Brisbane, your neighborhood may have noise level restrictions. When selecting a generator, check the decibel rating and ask your installer about noise-reduction enclosures or barriers.
Additionally, choose a location that doesn’t spoil your home’s curb appeal. Generators can be camouflaged or hidden behind landscape features if installed thoughtfully.
Conclusion
Installing a backup generator is one of the best ways to protect your home or business from unexpected power interruptions. From selecting the right generator and understanding wiring requirements to staying compliant with local Brisbane regulations, each step is crucial to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Best Magnetic Garage Door Net Screens for Easy Walk-Through Access and Insect Protection
Transform Your Garage into a Comfortable, Bug-Free Zone
Garages are no longer just for parking cars or storing tools—they’ve become multifunctional spaces for working out, hosting gatherings, or tackling DIY projects. However, leaving your garage door open for airflow and light often invites unwanted pests and insects. That’s where a Garage Door Net Screen with Magnet becomes an essential upgrade. These screens allow fresh air to circulate while keeping out flies, mosquitoes, and debris—offering the perfect blend of comfort and functionality.
What is a Magnetic Garage Door Net Screen?
A Garage Door Net Screen with Magnet is a mesh barrier that attaches to the frame of your garage door, typically using Velcro, tacks, or adhesive strips. Its standout feature is the central magnetic closure system, which allows you to walk through the mesh hands-free. As you pass through, the magnets automatically snap shut behind you, maintaining a sealed environment against bugs and outdoor contaminants. This simple yet ingenious design adds both convenience and protection.
Why Magnetic Screens Are Ideal for Garage Spaces
Many homeowners overlook the potential of magnetic net screens, assuming they’re only suitable for backdoors or patios. But using them in your garage can be a game-changer. Here’s why:
Effortless Entry and Exit: Whether you're wheeling in a lawnmower or walking in with groceries, the magnetic center closure allows seamless access without fumbling with zippers or latches.
Insect Protection without Sacrificing Airflow: Enjoy the breeze without the bugs. The fine mesh design keeps pests out while allowing ventilation, preventing your garage from becoming hot and stuffy.
Temporary or Permanent Use: These screens can be installed seasonally or kept up year-round, depending on your needs. They’re designed to be easy to install and remove.
Cost-Effective Comfort: Compared to installing permanent doors or screen systems, magnetic garage screens offer a budget-friendly alternative with similar benefits.
Key Features to Look for in the Best Garage Door Net Screen with Magnet
When shopping for the best garage screen, not all models are created equal. Consider the following essential features:
1. Strong Magnetic Closure
The core functionality lies in the magnet system. Look for screens with full-length magnetic strips or multiple magnets along the center seam to ensure it snaps shut every time.
2. Durable Mesh Material
Opt for heavy-duty polyester or fiberglass mesh that resists tears and withstands outdoor exposure. At Alien System, we focus on offering screens with superior mesh quality for extended performance.
3. Easy Installation
Velcro strips, push pins, or hook-and-loop systems should be included for hassle-free setup. Clear instructions and compatibility with various garage sizes are key.
4. Reinforced Edges
Double-stitched edges and reinforced corners add to the longevity of the screen and help it resist sagging or fraying over time.
5. Adjustable Fit
Some premium models offer trim-to-fit options or are available in multiple sizes to suit single and double garage doors.
Perfect for a Range of Applications
A Garage Door Net Screen with Magnet isn’t just a solution for pest control—it’s an enabler of versatile garage use. Whether you’re:
Converting your garage into a temporary home gym
Hosting a weekend BBQ with the garage as an extension of your patio
Letting kids and pets play in a safe, shaded area
Working on cars or projects without sweltering heat
...this simple addition can significantly improve your garage’s comfort and usability.
Tips for Maintaining Your Magnetic Garage Screen
To get the most out of your garage screen, follow these maintenance tips:
Clean the Mesh Regularly: Dust and debris can accumulate over time. Use a vacuum or soft cloth to keep the mesh clean.
Check the Magnets: Occasionally inspect for any shifted or loose magnets to ensure the screen closes fully.
Store Properly When Not in Use: If you’re removing the screen for winter or weather changes, fold it neatly and store it in a dry place.
Inspect Adhesive Strips: Replace worn-out Velcro or adhesive strips to maintain a secure fit.
By taking good care of your screen, you’ll enjoy its benefits season after season.

Upgrading Your Garage Door: ROI for Northern California Homeowners
When it comes to home improvement projects in Northern California, some upgrades offer better returns than others. One of the most underrated yet high-impact investments you can make? Upgrading your garage door. Whether you're preparing to sell your home or simply want to boost curb appeal and security, replacing your old or damaged garage door offers exceptional ROI (return on investment).

As a trusted garage door company, R&S Norcal has helped countless homeowners throughout Northern California increase property value and functionality with expertly installed garage door upgrades. In this blog post, we’ll break down why upgrading your garage door is one of the smartest investments you can make—and how you can maximize your return.
Why Garage Door Upgrades Are a Top ROI Project
According to Remodeling Magazine’s annual Cost vs. Value Report, garage door replacements consistently rank among the top home improvement projects for ROI. In fact, recent data shows homeowners can recoup up to 102% of the cost of a new garage door in resale value—sometimes even more in competitive California markets.
Here’s why:
First Impressions Matter: Your garage door is one of the first things people see. A stylish, modern door boosts your home’s curb appeal instantly.
Energy Efficiency: Newer doors offer better insulation, helping regulate temperature and lower energy costs—especially important in Northern California’s varied climate.
Security & Safety: A sturdy, up-to-date garage door deters break-ins and operates more safely, which is appealing to both homeowners and potential buyers.
Low Maintenance: Modern materials like aluminum, vinyl, and composite reduce upkeep and extend the door’s lifespan.
Curb Appeal and Property Value
In Northern California neighborhoods—from coastal communities to inland suburbs—homes with modern, attractive garage doors stand out. A dated or damaged door can drag down the appearance of the entire property, while a sleek new design creates a fresh, well-maintained look.
Consider matching your garage door to your home's architectural style. Whether you're into contemporary glass-paneled doors or rustic carriage-house designs, R&S Norcal offers a wide variety of customizable options to suit every taste and increase your home’s marketability.
Improved Energy Efficiency
Many older garage doors lack proper insulation, leading to significant heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. In Northern California, where climate zones vary widely, thermal performance is key. Insulated garage doors help:
Regulate temperature inside the garage
Improve overall home energy efficiency
Protect stored items from weather extremes
Reduce strain on HVAC systems in attached garages
Upgrading to an insulated door can lower energy bills and appeal to eco-conscious buyers—an increasingly important demographic in California.
Better Security and Smart Technology
Home security is a top priority for California homeowners, and modern garage doors offer features designed to protect your property. When you upgrade, you can choose options such as:
Reinforced materials that resist break-ins
Automatic locking systems
Smart openers with remote access
Motion-sensor lights and alerts
At R&S Norcal, we also install smart garage door openers compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and other home automation systems. These features are not only convenient but offer peace of mind—a big selling point if you ever decide to list your home.
Fewer Repairs and Long-Term Savings
Old garage doors are more prone to breakdowns and frequent maintenance. Between broken springs, frayed cables, and noisy openers, repair costs can add up quickly. Upgrading to a newer system reduces your need for repeated garage door repair and saves money in the long run.
Plus, many newer models come with extended warranties and improved durability, meaning fewer headaches for you as a homeowner. At R&S Norcal, we guide you through selecting a door that fits your long-term budget and offers maximum value.
Customized Solutions for Northern California Homes
What works for a home in foggy Half Moon Bay may not be the best fit for a property in sunny Sacramento. Climate, aesthetics, and environmental exposure should all influence your choice of garage door material and features.
As a regional garage door company, R&S Norcal understands the unique needs of Northern California homeowners. We offer doors specifically suited for:
Coastal environments (with corrosion-resistant materials)
Hot inland areas (with UV-resistant finishes and insulation)
Mountain regions (with enhanced wind resistance and sealing)
Our team provides personalized consultations to help you make the best decision for your home and climate zone.
How to Maximize Your ROI
If you’re considering upgrading your garage door, here are a few ways to get the most out of your investment:
1. Choose a Quality Door
Opt for durable, low-maintenance materials like steel, aluminum, or fiberglass. Look for models with good insulation (R-value), a strong warranty, and features tailored to your region.
2. Go for Timeless Design
While bold designs can be fun, a classic look tends to have broader appeal to buyers. Neutral colors and clean lines work well with a variety of home styles.
3. Upgrade the Opener
Pair your new door with a smart opener. These offer convenience, safety, and are increasingly expected by today’s tech-savvy homeowners.
4. Professional Installation
Never cut corners on installation. Proper fitting ensures long-term performance, safety, and optimal function. The professionals at R&S Norcal offer expert installation and ongoing garage door repair to keep your system in top shape.
Real Homeowners, Real Results
We’ve worked with homeowners across the Bay Area, Sonoma County, Monterey, and beyond who’ve seen real results from a garage door upgrade. From selling faster in a competitive market to enjoying lower energy bills and better security, the return goes far beyond dollars and cents.

That’s the power of working with a trusted local garage door company.
Final Thoughts
Upgrading your garage door is one of the most valuable home improvements you can make as a Northern California homeowner. It increases curb appeal, boosts energy efficiency, enhances security, and delivers a fantastic return on investment—both financially and in everyday satisfaction.

Unreal - Main Menu Environment
I needed an environment to place my in-world widgets so that they aren't just floating in the sky. Early on when creating the systems for the UI I thought about placing it in a garage, which a racer would definitely have.
However, I decided to run a little poll instead asking a few different people what environment they think would most fit.
Most people seemed to agree with me so I decided to find some assets to use for a garage.
Asset Pack
When browsing asset packs that I have in my Unreal Library I saw Assetville which I remember had a lot of different assets to create many different rooms, garages, shops and more from when I used it in my MARS Project from the first year.
I decided to create a new project and check out the example map to see if I could find any assets that would be of use. I found this mechanics garage which had the walls, flooring and all the decorations I could need for making my own garage.
It is also low poly which will continue the theme of the macintosh computer that the settings menu uses and has lots of different assets to choose from which should allow for a distinct area of the garage for each menu.
Settings Menu
As I have the settings menu already stylised to an old computer, and placed on the model of a Macintosh, it would make sense to place the computer in an office space. Mechanics tend to have an office space for files and online work so it wouldn't look out of place at all.
I created this office here with a small amount of decoration for now so that I could trial if I like this kind of environment for the settings menu, which I do. I think the view from the camera is really cool and the room has lots of potential if I added some more clutter about.
I do think the camera view needs to be more focused on the computer screen so that you can more easily see all the settings, but I will gather some feedback and see what they say.
Bike Selector
I decided to create a little mechanic area and use a chalkboard asset as the way to display this widget. I decided to use the chalkboard over other potential choices as I the widget was already coloured black and white so it was the first one that came to mind ; it is also the one that fits most in the area when looking at my other options.
Now the the UI is on a chalkboard I thought that I needed some kind of font to make it fit the area more. I found these two different font choices from dafont. I found that I much prefer the hand drawn look of the second one over the bulkier bubble writing of the first one.
I will gather some opinions when asking for feedback on the environment.
I have an issue where the widget is emitting light which will really affect the darker room. Obviously I will be adding lights to this room which will negate the effect somewhat, but I would like to still fix this.
This post from the Unreal Engine Forums says that it is due to the auto exposure on the camera. So I went and turned off auto exposure on the cameras, and manually adjusted the amount of exposure to prevent much illumination from the widget.
This works and prevents the widget from glowing too much, but it does still glow. It should now be a small enough amount of light that adding in some interior lights makes the widgets no longer appear to glow.
Start Screen
Looking through the assets I had a found a couple choices that I could do for the start screen. However, I decided that the easiest would probably be the pinboard ; since I am struggling for time I thought this one would make the most sense while still looking very nice.

How Long Do Small Battery LED Lights Last? A Complete Guide
The lifespan of small battery LED lights depends on several factors, including battery type, usage time, and light quality. At Evan Designs, we create LED lighting solutions that are both energy-efficient and built to last, offering users long-lasting brightness with minimal power consumption. On average, high-quality small battery LED lights can run anywhere from 10 to 100 hours on a single set of batteries, depending on their size and usage. With the right care and battery type, these lights can serve reliably in emergency kits, DIY projects, or everyday lighting needs. Evan Designs ensures each product is crafted for durability and extended life, so you can trust your lighting to perform when you need it most.
Battery Type Plays a Key Role in Lifespan Performance
One of the biggest factors influencing how long small battery LED lights last is the type of battery used. Alkaline, lithium, and rechargeable batteries all provide different levels of performance. Alkaline batteries are common and cost-effective, but lithium batteries tend to last longer and perform better under extreme temperatures. Evan Designs recommends using high-quality lithium batteries for extended runtime and consistent brightness. Choosing the right battery ensures that your lights stay powered during emergencies, projects, or continuous use. Matching the right battery with your specific LED light model is essential for maximizing efficiency and overall lifespan.
LED Quality Determines Brightness and Power Consumption
Not all LEDs are created equal. The quality of the diode used in small battery LED lights has a direct impact on how long the lights will operate on a single charge. High-efficiency LEDs require less power to emit strong light, making them a better fit for longer runtimes. Evan Designs uses premium-grade LEDs in their lighting products, which helps reduce energy draw while maintaining excellent brightness. The result is a longer-lasting light that doesn't sacrifice visibility or safety. Investing in quality lighting upfront means fewer battery changes, longer usage periods, and more reliability across all settings.
Usage Habits Influence Overall Lifespan Significantly
The way small battery LED lights are used can dramatically affect how long they last. Keeping the light on continuously will naturally deplete battery power faster than using it intermittently. Dimming features, automatic shut-off, and motion sensors can help extend battery life by reducing unnecessary usage. Evan Designs offers a variety of LED light models with smart features that help conserve energy without compromising on brightness. Whether you're using the lights for emergency kits, craft projects, or camping gear, understanding and adjusting your usage habits is a practical way to get the most out of each light.
Environmental Conditions Affect Battery and LED Longevity
Temperature, humidity, and air quality can all affect the performance of small battery LED lights. Cold environments can reduce battery output, while extreme heat may shorten the lifespan of the light’s internal components. Evan Designs crafts lighting products built to withstand diverse conditions, making them ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Whether you're dealing with freezing temperatures during winter camping or humid conditions in a garage, choosing lights designed for durability is key. Proper storage and occasional maintenance also help prevent early wear and tear, ensuring that your lights are ready when you need them.
Typical Runtime Ranges for Common LED Light Models
On average, small battery LED lights can last anywhere from 10 to 100 hours depending on the model, brightness setting, and battery type. Low-power lights used for ambient purposes may last several nights on a single set of batteries, while brighter, high-output models will drain power more quickly. Evan Designs provides clear specifications on expected runtime for each of their products, so you can make informed decisions based on your specific needs. Whether you're looking for long-term use during a power outage or short bursts for hobby projects, there's a reliable LED solution to match your timing requirements.
Rechargeable Versus Disposable Batteries in LED Lighting
Choosing between rechargeable and disposable batteries is a crucial decision that affects convenience, cost, and environmental impact. Rechargeable batteries offer long-term savings and are ideal for frequent use, while disposable batteries provide quick, hassle-free replacement. Evan Designs supports both battery types across their LED product line, allowing users to select what works best for their situation. For daily use, rechargeable options can dramatically reduce waste and expenses over time. For emergency kits or travel, disposable batteries might be more convenient. Either way, the compatibility of small battery LED lights with various battery options makes them a flexible and user-friendly solution.
Maintenance Tips to Extend the Life of Your LED Lights
Proper care and storage can significantly extend the lifespan of your small battery LED lights. Make sure to turn off lights when not in use, clean battery contacts regularly, and store them in a dry, room-temperature environment. Evan Designs offers helpful tutorials and product guides to help users maintain their lighting systems easily. Replacing batteries before full depletion and using the correct type also contributes to longer-lasting performance. Regular maintenance not only preserves your light’s functionality but also keeps them dependable for whenever they're needed most—whether for emergency use, creative work, or everyday lighting tasks.
Conclusion
The lifespan of small battery LED lights depends on various factors including battery type, LED quality, environmental conditions, and usage habits. With the right combination of care, smart battery choices, and reliable products from Evan Designs, these lights can serve for extended periods without interruption. Whether you're using them in emergency kits, hobby crafts, or mobile setups, knowing how to maximize performance ensures you get the most value from your lighting investment. Evan Designs specializes in creating high-quality, long-lasting LED lighting solutions that help you stay prepared and well-lit in any scenario. With smart usage and proper maintenance, your LED lights can be a lasting, dependable companion.

Tips for Buying the Right Electric Hoist for Your Lifting Needs
Introduction
Electric hoists are essential for lifting and transporting heavy loads in construction, manufacturing, and warehouse operations. Choosing the right hoist can significantly improve efficiency, reduce labor costs, and enhance workplace safety. However, with various options available, selecting the best hoist for your specific needs can be challenging.
Whether you are looking for a hoist for industrial applications, construction projects, or warehouse operations, it is crucial to consider factors like load capacity, lifting height, power requirements, and safety features. In this guide, we will discuss the key aspects to consider when purchasing an electric hoist and provide useful tips to ensure you make the right investment.
At AHM Building Materials, we offer a range of high-quality electric hoists designed for different lifting needs.
Understanding the Importance of Electric Hoists
Electric hoists have transformed the way heavy materials are handled in construction and industrial environments. Unlike manual lifting methods, which require significant effort and multiple workers, electric hoists provide fast and effortless lifting, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.
By integrating advanced safety mechanisms, overload protection, and remote control operation, electric hoists enhance both efficiency and workplace safety. Their use in warehouses, workshops, factories, and construction sites makes them an indispensable tool for handling heavy-duty lifting equipment.
Key Factors to Consider When Buying an Electric Hoist
1. Load Capacity: Choosing the Right Weight Limit
One of the most critical factors in selecting an electric hoist is its load capacity. Hoists are available in different weight ratings, ranging from 500 kg to 50+ tons. Choosing a hoist with insufficient capacity can lead to equipment failure, workplace hazards, and increased maintenance costs.
For small to medium-sized projects, a 1- to 5-ton electric hoist is typically sufficient. However, for heavy industrial applications, a 10- to 50-ton hoist may be required. Always consider your maximum load weight and select a hoist with a slightly higher capacity to ensure safe and efficient operation.
2. Lifting Height: Determining the Required Reach
The lifting height of an electric hoist refers to how high the hoist can safely lift a load. Depending on the construction site or industrial setup, different lifting heights are required.
For high-rise buildings – A long lifting height is needed to transport materials to upper floors.
For warehouse operations – A medium lifting height may be sufficient.
For compact spaces – A short lifting height with precise control is essential.
Consider the vertical clearance of your workspace before selecting a hoist to avoid potential lifting restrictions.
3. Power Supply: Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase Hoists
Electric hoists are available in single-phase and three-phase power options. The right choice depends on your available power supply and lifting requirements.
Single-phase hoists – Suitable for light to medium lifting tasks (commonly used in small workshops and garages).
Three-phase hoists – Ideal for heavy-duty lifting in construction sites and industrial facilities (provides greater efficiency and power).
Verify your site’s power capacity before purchasing an electric hoist to ensure compatibility.
4. Safety Features: Prioritizing Workplace Protection
Safety should be a top priority when selecting an electric hoist. Modern hoists come with advanced safety mechanisms to prevent accidents and equipment damage. Look for:
Overload protection – Prevents lifting loads beyond the hoist’s rated capacity.
Emergency stop functions – Allows immediate shutdown in case of danger.
Automatic braking system – Ensures the load remains securely held when lifting stops.
Thermal protection – Prevents the hoist motor from overheating during prolonged use.
These features enhance operator safety and reduce the risk of workplace injuries.
5. Type of Hoist: Chain vs. Wire Rope Hoists
Electric hoists are categorized based on their lifting mechanism:
✔ Electric Chain Hoists – Ideal for medium-duty lifting (up to 5 tons). These hoists use chains and are suitable for factories, workshops, and small construction sites.
✔ Wire Rope Hoists – Designed for heavy-duty lifting (10+ tons). These hoists use steel cables and are commonly used in large-scale construction projects, warehouses, and industrial environments.
Choosing the right type depends on your project requirements and lifting intensity.
6. Speed and Control Features
Lifting speed is another crucial factor, especially for time-sensitive projects. Electric hoists come with different speed settings, including:
✔ Single-speed hoists – Offer consistent lifting speed, suitable for general use. ✔ Variable-speed hoists – Allow precise control, ideal for delicate lifting tasks. ✔ Remote-controlled hoists – Provide wireless operation, increasing efficiency and safety.
If you need precise load positioning, a variable-speed hoist with remote operation is recommended.

Hello Dania Beach homeowners! While often overlooked, your garage door plays a pivotal role in both the security and energy efficiency of your home. At AAA Garage Door Service, we understand the importance of a high-quality garage door that does more than just open and close. Let’s dive into why upgrading your garage door can significantly benefit your daily life, home security, and wallet.
1. An Overlooked Aspect of Home Security
Your garage door is one of the largest and most vulnerable entry points to your home. An old or malfunctioning garage door not only poses a risk of accidental injury but also serves as an easy target for burglars. By upgrading to a newer model with enhanced security features such as automatic locks, built-in alarms, and smart technology that integrates with your home security system, you can greatly improve the safety of your home. These advanced features allow you to monitor and control access remotely, ensuring your home is safe whether you’re inside or halfway around the world.
2. Boosting Energy Efficiency
Is your garage attached to your home? If so, it’s an area that can significantly affect your home’s overall energy efficiency. Older garage doors typically lack proper insulation, which means that heat and air conditioning can easily escape, leading to higher utility bills. Modern garage doors come with improved insulation materials and seals that prevent air leakage, maintaining your home’s internal temperature more effectively. This not only makes your living space more comfortable but also reduces strain on your HVAC system, saving you money in the long run.

3. Enhancing Curb Appeal and Home Value
A garage door occupies a large portion of your home’s exterior and is one of the first things people notice from the street. Upgrading an old, worn-out garage door can dramatically improve your home’s curb appeal. Today’s market offers a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary, allowing you to find the perfect look to complement your home’s aesthetic. Furthermore, an upgraded garage door is a notable asset when it comes to evaluating your property’s value, offering one of the best returns on investment among home improvement projects.
4. Reduced Maintenance and Greater Reliability
Old garage doors can be noisy and require frequent repairs, which can be inconvenient and costly. New garage doors are designed with durability and longevity in mind, utilizing better materials and construction techniques. These improvements mean that new doors often require less maintenance and provide more reliable performance. No more unexpected malfunctions as you’re rushing out the door, and less time spent on upkeep.
5. Innovative Features for Modern Homes
With technological advancements, garage doors have become smarter. Upgrading gives you access to features like WiFi connectivity, which allows you to open or close your garage door from anywhere using your smartphone. Some systems even offer integration with other smart home devices, such as lights and security cameras, enhancing the overall functionality and convenience of your home automation systems.
